Process
  • Relies on donations of gently used coats, new coats, and cash donations 
  • Burke cleaners provides drop off points at their businesses
  • Burke Cleaners cleans coats at cost
  • Coats are delivered to Mississippi Bend AEA
  • Coat orders are filled and delivered

 

History

  • Coats for Kids began in 1999 ­– established to provide winter coats to students in Davenport, Diocese of Davenport and Pleasant Valley School
  • Dr. David E. Lane, Assoc. Superintendent for Davenport Community Schools instrumental in program’s initiation 
  • Program named for Dr. Lane upon his death in 1999 
  • Project provided more than 1,000 winter coats to students 1999-2002
  • Project moved to Mississippi Bend AEA in 2002-2003 due to space issues in the Davenport School District 
  • Expanded to include schools in Clinton, Jackson, Muscatine and Scott counties as well as parts of Cedar and Louisa counties in 2002
  • Included children in Rock Island County, Illinois, 2007
  • Provided more than 10,400 coats as of May 2008
  • Restructured to include Advisory Board and Operations Group in 2008
