Program Description:

The Cognitive Tutor program provides training and consultations for schools implementing Carnegie Learning’s Cognitive Tutor Bridge to Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Integrated Math curricula.  The AEA 9 E2T2 (Enhancing Education Through Technology) Consortium has used federal technology funds (Title II, D) to support this regional mathematics implementation since 2003. Ongoing professional development for Cognitive Tutor mathematics educators in grades 7-12 is provided through videoconferencing and ICN sessions.

Agency Goal:

To Increase the percentage of low socioeconomic, individualized education programs, and minority students achieving mathematics proficiency in grades 4, 8, and 11, especially in mathematics problem-solving.

Project Goals:

The goal of this project is the improvement of 1) the quantitative and technological abilities of all middle and high school mathematics students and 2) the quality of mathematics instruction in AEA 9.

Program:
Years 1 and 2 of the grant involved training Cognitive Tutor teachers, building a teacher support network and an assessment system, and conducting classroom observations. Year 3 focused on monitoring teacher implementation and refining the student achievement data collection system. Year 4 focused on implementing revised Cognitive Tutor curricula, videoconferencing, and analysis of student achievement data. Year 5 focused on increasing implementation fidelity through mentoring and coaching. Years 6 & 7 focused on teachers using student Teachers Toolkit data to differentiate instruction.
